Nine hundred years, restored.
St Bartholomew’s Hospital is the oldest in Britain still on its original site, founded in 1123. I documented the restoration of its Grade I-listed North Wing, including William Hogarth’s monumental staircase paintings.
The North Wing, designed by architect James Gibbs, was completed in 1732 to house the hospital’s administrative and ceremonial functions — its Great Hall and Hogarth Stair used to welcome the donors the hospital depended on. Barts Heritage led a major restoration, completed in 2025: conserving William Hogarth’s paintings, the Great Hall’s ornate plasterwork ceiling, and the 1743 Charter Window, and opening the building for public use for the first time in its history.
